HOUSTON, April 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has contracted BAE Systems to provide mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles with spare parts and maintenance services.
British company BAE said it was awarded the $23.8 million contract as part of an effort by the Defense Department to sustain the more than 2,800 Caiman MRAP vehicles built by BAE to protect soldiers in Iraq from roadside bombs.
Under the deal, BAE will also supply the Army with replacement and spare parts and provide instructors when needed at forward operating bases.
"This contract will help keep vehicles in operating condition, which is essential to saving soldiers' lives and supporting the success of the military mission in Iraq," Bruce Harrison, BAE Systems vice president of product support in Houston, said in a statement.
"We can continue to provide the parts and instructors and maintenance support to our soldiers through our forward support representatives and wherever and whenever the Army needs it."
