MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has contracted BAE Systems to provide Vehicle Emergency Escape Window kits for the M1151 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle.

BAE received the contract from the Army Tank Automotive and Armaments Command. Under the $17 million deal, BAE will supply more than 4,700 of its Vehicle Emergency Escape Window kits for installation on the M1151 HMMWV.

BAE's emergency escape kits, installed on several tactical armored combat vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan, offer soldiers the ability to quickly exit a vehicle during an emergency situation.

"Our troops constantly face uncertain outcomes on the battlefield, and it's critical to ensure their survival now and in the future," Dennis Morris, BAE Systems Armament Systems president, said in a statement.

"The Vehicle Emergency Escape Window is another example of life-saving technologies proven to be valuable in safeguarding soldiers and Marines in the midst of a combat situation."
