TEWKSBURY, Mass., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- The Spanish army has successfully tested its surface-to-air missile system with the support of Raytheon and Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace.

Spanish defense officials announced a successful testing of the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System during the country's first live-fire exercise of the new technology. The tests of the missile system were supported by U.S. company Raytheon and Norway-based Kongsberg.

Officials say the NASAMS test successfully targeted airborne drones at a firing range in Mazagon, Spain. Raytheon partnered with the U.S. Air Force's Air Armament Center to develop NASAMS. The company provided planning and data recording, among other support measures, during the live-fire exercise.

"Raytheon's support to the Spanish army enabled it to conduct missions independently," Pete Franklin, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems national theater and security programs vice president, said in a statement.

"Through our efforts, the army was able to successfully demonstrate its capabilities in using this weapon system."
