Navy contracts for torpedo upgrades

TEWKSBURY, Mass., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has contracted Raytheon for the company to provide torpedo guidance and control upgrade kit technologies and support services.

Under the $165 million deal, Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems unit will provide the Navy with 228 of its MK48 Common Broadband Advanced Sonar System torpedo guidance and control upgrade kits. The contract also includes 192 of the MK54 lightweight torpedo kits.

"This contract extends Raytheon's established partnership with the U.S. Navy in the development of the world's most capable undersea warfare weapons," Charles Bush, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems Seapower Capability Systems vice president, said in a statement.

"We remain committed to building, testing and delivering affordable, high-performance, reliable weapons systems that our customers can rely on, without a doubt."

Officials say the contract also has provisions for foreign military sales that include providing the Royal Australian Navy with 19 MK48 CBASS kits and the Turkish navy with 100 MK54 kits.
