Phalanx ALMTV assembly begins

BOULDER, Colo., May 22 (UPI) -- Colorado-based Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has begun assembly of three Phalanx All-Light Marine television cameras under a contract with Raytheon Co.

The assembly of the Phalanx ALMTV, under a $2.2 million contract from Raytheon, is a push by Ball Aerospace to qualify their designs for full-rate camera production. The company was contracted for the ALMTV technology, which has a low light electron multiplication charge device sensor coupled with an infrared zoom lens, to support camera upgrades on the 575 Phalanx systems deployed around the world.

Phalanx is a rapid-fire radar and gun system controlled by computer that provides a defense against anti-ship missiles, among other threats. The U.S. Navy surface combatant ships and 23 allied nations use the Phalanx.

"The Phalanx ALMTV program is a perfect fit with Ball's capabilities to develop, produce and support the imaging needs of the war fighter for the long term," Jim Oschmann, director of Ball's antenna and video technologies group, said in a statement.
