TACOM orders additional ASVs

NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command announced a follow-on deal with Textron Marine & Land Systems for armored security vehicles.

Under a $228 million contract modification, Textron Marine & Land Systems will build an additional 329 M1117 ASVs for use by TACOM. Officials say the contract modification brings the total number of ASVs to 2,058 vehicles that Textron Marine & Land Systems has produced or has remaining to deliver under the U.S. Army contract.

Textron Marine & Land Systems officials say the ASV is designed with multiple layers of armor that provides defense against small-arms fire, artillery projectile fragments and land mines.

"With this additional order, our customer has again chosen the ASV to protect soldiers," Tom Walmsley, Textron Marine & Land Systems general manager, said in a statement. "Our partnership with TACOM has allowed these vehicles to be delivered with the latest fragmentation protection kits, improving the system survivability even more."

"The ASV is used by the U.S. Army for its Military Police, convoy protection and Field Artillery Combat Observation and Lasing Teams. More than 1040 ASVs have been deployed in combat missions in support of the war on terrorism," the release said.
