New study shows wireless security risk

CUPERTINO, Calif., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- A new study from California-based Trend Micro Inc. suggests there are increased risks to the growing mobile business environment.

Trend Micro is a network antivirus and Internet content security services provider. Tuesday the company released results of a study it conducted into the behavior of corporate workers who have access to company mobile technologies.

The study indicates that with the rise of mobile technology for an increasing mobile business world the threat to a company's confidential information has grown considerably.

The study tracked responses from 1,600 corporate computer end users across the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan. In all countries surveyed except Japan, the more mobile an end user is, the greater the likelihood he or she will receive spam and other attacks. This is despite an indication that mobile end users are typically more Web savvy.

"Risky behavior by mobile workers is increasing the challenge for IT administrators and security specialists," said Raimund Genes of Trend Micro, in a statement. "Mobile workers may often be unaware of the risk they pose to the corporate network and that their behavior is increasing the risk to corporate security.

"Of particular concern to our customers is the admission by users to having sent confidential information over tools such as Instant Messenger. The pervasive use of the Web combined with the complexity of protecting against Web threats creates possibly the greatest challenge to corporate security in a decade."
