AS&E wins TSA screening contract

BILLERICA, Mass., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- American Science and Engineering Inc. said Wednesday it has won a TSA contract for its security screening systems.

AS&E said the U.S. Transportation Security Administration had approved the funding of five SmartCheck personnel screening systems with an option to purchase. The potential maximum value of the contract was $10.8 million, the company said in a statement.

The contract "also provides TSA with an option to purchase an additional 75 SmartCheck systems over the next two years. The IDIQ contract includes warranty service and training," AS&E said.

"We are extremely proud to assist the TSA with their mission to safeguard air travel," said AS&E President Anthony Fabiano. "This IDIQ offers TSA the ability to deploy our SmartCheck personnel screening system on a broad basis for use as a safe and effective tool for aviation threat detection.

"SmartCheck provides the most comprehensive personnel screening technology available for detecting a broad range of potential threat items while ensuring the privacy of the traveling public," Fabiano said. "We look forward to our continued work with the TSA on this critical mission."

AS&E described SmartCheck as "a safe, non-intrusive personnel screening system that allows operators to detect threats and contraband hidden on a person while ensuring privacy."

The company said its Backscatter X-ray technology "displays both organic and inorganic materials, revealing objects such as guns and knives, explosives, composite weapons, and other hidden threats and contraband. The software provides a sketch outline of the passenger with information for the security operator to identify the nature and location of threats, thus eliminating the need for intrusive and time-consuming pat-down searches."
