Navy orders launchers for Aegis destroyers

BALTIMORE, April 12 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin has received an order for MK 41 missile launchers that will serve as the primary weapon system for three new U.S. Navy destroyers.

The Vertical Launch Systems will be installed aboard the trio of Arleigh Burke-class warships with delivery to be completed by 2010.

Arleigh Burke destroyers come equipped with the Aegis weapons system and are slated to make up the backbone of the United States' sea-based missile defense system. The interceptor missiles will be launched from the versatile MK 41, which also accommodates missiles used for anti-aircraft, anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare.

It is considered the only multi-purpose naval missile launcher capable of being used against a variety of threats.

The $50.6 million order announced by Lockheed Tuesday calls specifically for the fabrication and delivery of 36 MK 41 VLS Baseline VII modules, 12 of which will be installed on each destroyer at Lockheed's Middle River facility outside Baltimore.

Baseline VII is an advancement of the original MK 41 design that includes improved electronics modules and off-the-shelf and open architecture technologies.

"The MK 41 has a well-earned record of distinction in protecting our country," said Lockheed Vice President Dave Broadbent. "Once these 36 modules are delivered, the Vertical Launch System will be on 62 Aegis destroyers throughout the fleet."

The order is a contract modification from the original $27 million pact awarded last summer for the purchase of long lead-time materials for the project.
