Terror attacks foiled

LONDON, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- British police have foiled eight terrorist attacks on London since al-Qaida's 2001 assault on the United States.

London's mayor, Ken Livingstone, told BBC Radio 4 that there have been two attempted attacks since the July 7 bombing of the city's transportation system in which more than 50 people were killed -- the botched subway and bus attacks two weeks later and a previously undisclosed one.

Livingstone, however, would give no details of the second attempt. The Metropolitan Police also gave no additional details for security reasons. No details were given on the eight other attempts prior to July 7.

Livingstone did say, however, that he did not believe the attempted attacks were part of a large international conspiracy. Instead he said they were largely the result of "fairly disorganized" and "disaffected" people, according to a report of the interview in the Evening Standard.
