The incident occurred at noon when the Vijawada-Rayagada passenger train stopped at Koneru station, police officials said. More than 10 armed Maoist rebels burst into the compartment and opened fire at the RPF men.

Railway officials said the RPF team boarded the train at Visakhapatnam for the disbursement of salaries of the staff along the route. The exchange of fire continued for 10 minutes but the rebels escaped with the cash and three rifles.

Two Maoist rebels were injured.

In another incident, District Superintendent of Police Bhavna Saxena said police killed one rebel in Warangal district when Maoists tried to blow up a police station.

"But the alert police repulsed the attack," she said.

Maoist rebels are active in more than 10 Indian states.
