India seeks U.S. help on Asia stability

NEW DELHI, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- India has said it, along with the United States, could contribute to a better balance of power in Asia.

"New Delhi is poised to be a major player as well," Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran told World Economic Forum summit, The Hindu newspaper reported Tuesday.

He said to manage the emerging security scenario in Asia more and more countries needed to be brought within the discipline of a mutually agreed security paradigm for the region and both India and the United States could contribute to this.

"I have not heard the word containment used for China in India's bilateral discussion with Washington," Saran said.

He said the United States has been very careful to emphasize that it will not engage in any containment policy regarding China.

"What is being looked at is, with China's emergence as major economic and military power, how is this going to be accommodated within a new kind of structure that needs to emerge in Asia," he said.

The foreign secretary said it is not only the aspect of accommodating China in some way, but also accommodating India because India is also a rising economic power; it too has certain capabilities that are going to rise.

India has made serious efforts to improve relations with China. It has also acknowledged China as an emerging economic power and military in the continent.
