Bioterror attacks coming: Interpol chief

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Al-Qaida is going to launch deadly bioterror attacks and the world is not ready for them, the head of Interpol warned Tuesday.

"Al-Qaida has openly claimed the right to kill 4 million people using biological and chemical weapons," Interpol Secretary General Ron Noble, told delegates from 41 different African nations at a bioterror conference.

"Al-Qaida is willing able and patient enough to plan and prepare to execute terrorist acts that would have been considered unrealistic or fantasy," he said.

"The potential consequences of such an attack could be so far-reaching that a lack of action in preventing bioterrorism poses an unacceptable risk to the safety of societies around the world."

Noble has been sounding the warning on al-Qaida's determined drive to launch a devastating bio-terror attack that could kill millions of people for many months.

On March 1, he told an earlier bioterror conference in the French city of Lyons where Interpol is based, "There is no crime area where the police generally have as little training than in preventing or responding to bioterrorist attacks."
