4 killed, 45 hurt in Kashmir

NEW DELHI, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Four people were killed and 45 injured when a car bomb exploded in Srinagar, capital of Indian Kashmir.

Fourteen were in critical condition. The civil line area, where the blast took place Wednesday, shook in the explosion. The police said the explosive-laden car was parked outside the gate of the bank of Jammu and Kashmir.

"They (militants) might have seen the VIP vehicle parked there and hit the target. But I do not think it was aimed at him," said H.K. Lohia, deputy inspector general of police, Kashmir range, The Hindu newspaper said Thursday.

He said the former state minister and present member of legislative assembly Usman Majid, whose car was parked at the gate, narrowly escape, but received bruising to the face.

"His car was completely damaged. He is safe and out of danger. He was the target of the militants," said his assistant.

According to eyewitnesses, two people, including a bank guard, died in the blast.

It was the third consecutive explosion to have taken place in the valley since October.
