Three killed, 40 injured in Kashmir

NEW DELHI, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Militants lobbed a grenade at a public rally in Indian Kashmir's capital, Srinagar, killing three people and injuring 40.

The Hindu newspaper said Wednesday Deputy Superintendent of Kashmir police Shabir Ahmed who was injured in the attack was in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses said the grenade was lobbed toward the end of the meeting on Tuesday.

"Many were injured in a stampede that followed the explosion. Former state government minister Ghulam Hassan Mir is also among the injured, " the state police said.

In another incident, Indian security forces killed a militant holed up in a hotel in busy Lal Chowk area of the state capital, Srinagar. The gun battle between the militants, who attacked a bunker of the security forces, and security personnel lasted for 24 hours.

"A militant moving suspiciously near another hotel was captured. The two were part of a suicide squad of the terrorist outfit Al Mansoorian. The toll in the attack has gone up to five, " state police said.
