Authorities said they believe the man who killed himself was Azahari and that a number of informants had confirmed it. Two other suspected terrorists died in the raid and may also have committed suicide.

A number of others were taken prisoner, authorities said.

Azahari was a senior leader in the Jamaah Islamiah terror organization, affiliated with al-Qaida.

Police said they found the hideout after following one of his compatriots.

The Antara news agency said an explosion took place about a half-hour into a police siege of the premises in the suburb of Batu. Over the course of an additional two hours, there were two more explosions and gunfire heard before the building was entered and secured.
