El Salvador to withdraw troops from Iraq?

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- El Salvador's largest opposition party has called for pulling the country's troops troops in Iraq to help dealing with recent floods and landslides.

EFE news agency reported that the left-wing Farabundo Marti National Liberation has sponsored a measure in Congress to recall El Salvador's nearly 400 troops from Iraq. The Salvadorean contingent is the only group of soldiers from Latin America involved in the U.S.-led military coalition attempting to pacify the country.

The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front measure is considered unlikely to be approved, as the conservatives who currently control the country's executive branch also dominate the national legislature.

Hurricane Stan hit Central America and Mexico Oct. 1 with days of relentless rain, which caused flooding and landslides. More than 2,000 people died in Guatemala and another 125 in El Salvador, Mexico and Nicaragua. The storm left thousands of people homeless and caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
