Pakistan proposes fencing Afghan border

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- The Daily Times reported that Pakistan has made a formal proposal to Kabul to fence the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

While the Pakistani Foreign Office reported the offer, "They are yet to respond," according to Foreign Office spokesman Naeem Khan. The paper said Khan said that while specifics about the length and cost of the fence had yet to be finalized, fencing the entire border was not possible, adding, "The priority would be to fence those areas from where cross-border activity could take place."

Regarding Pakistan's other international borders Khan said that Pakistan and India were considering holding a meeting of the Joint Commission when Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh visits Pakistan next month. The Joint Commission last met in 1989.

In April Pakistan leader Gen. Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh agreed to revive the Joint Commission. Pakistani officials said that the Joint Commission might have to be restructured, as its four sub-commissions are assigned subjects being dealt with under the new composite Pakistani-Indian dialogue. A Pakistani delegation will visit India's contested Kishanganga dam and generation station on November 7 and subsequently meet an Indian delegation in New Delhi four days later.
