S.Korea's Roh begins U.S., C. America tour

SEOUL, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun embarked Thursday on a 10-day tour of the United States, Mexico and Costa Rica.

In New York, Roh will deliver a speech to the U.N. General Assembly Wednesday on a new order of peace and prosperity, and ending North Korea's nuclear weapons drive, officials said. It would be his first visit to the United Nations since he took office in early 2003.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Roh will have one-one-one meetings with leaders from Italy, Austria, Algeria and the Netherlands.

Roh was due to be in Mexico City Thursday for a two-day visit to meet with Mexican President Vicente Fox on ways to enhance their cooperative relationship in security and trade.

He will then fly to San Jose Sunday to meet with Costa Rican President Abel Pacheco and the leaders of eight Latin American states on enhancing bilateral ties.

"During his trip, President Roh will focus on cementing strong political and business alliances with the Central American nations, while upholding South Korea's preferred choice of U.N. Security Council reform," a Foreign Ministry official said.
