U.S., Afghan troops kill Taliban leader

WASHINGTON, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- U.S. and Afghan forces have killed a Taliban leader in eastern Afghanistan, the Pentagon reported Friday.

It said Qari Amadullah, who commanded a force of about 50 men, died Aug. 9 during heavy fighting near the city of Wazikwa.

Five other militants were also killed and three U.S. soldiers wounded.

"Killing this individual will significantly disrupt Taliban operations in the region," Army Brig. Gen. James G. Champion, deputy commander of Combined Joint Task Force 76, was quoted as saying in a report released by the Pentagon.
