An-Nahar: Hizbollah must be disarmed

BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 6 (UPI) -- Lebanon's an-Nahar commented on clashes between Hezbollah and Israel, saying the issue of disarming Hezbollah along U.N. Resolution 1559 has resurfaced.

The paper said it is clear that Israel is on the verge of reviewing its policy regarding Hezbollah's weapons after the withdrawal of the Syrian forces from Lebanon. But at the same time, it added, Israel has also started to place responsibility on the Lebanese authority for any deterioration happening on its northern border (with Lebanon), especially after the absence of the Syrian influence. It added that after the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon, anti-Syrian opposition have started to support Hezbollah, which it said was regarded by some Lebanese as a Syrian tool and a pressure card in Syrian hands, or defender of Iranian strategic interests in the region.

The paper speculated that Israeli officials were closely watching the positions of the Lebanese politicians regarding the "arms of the resistance, and it worries them to hear Lebanese parties, whether pro- or anti-Syrian, supporting Hezbollahs' military role in protecting the country's territories from Israeli attacks in light of the Lebanese army's inability to do that."
