Berserk cop kills boss at Indian airport

NEW DELHI, May 25 (UPI) -- A policeman on duty at Mumbai's International Airport surrendered to police early Sunday after killing his superior and taking five female colleagues hostage in a passenger lounge.

Constable D.L. Namdev fired 17 shots at his deputy commandant Saturday evening after the superior had turned down his leave application. Namdev wanted to go on vacation and was infuriated at being refused, according to witnesses.

Commandos surrounded the lounge and began to negotiate with him. Several hours later Namdev gave himself up on promises from police that they would look into his grievances sympathetically.

Neither the shooting incident nor the hostage situation affected international flights. The terminal where Namdev worked was cordoned off and airplane arrivals and departures continued as normal, said airport authorities.

Mumbai's international airport is one of the two busiest airports in India.
