Britain not to use Cyprus bases to attack

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Visiting Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said Friday that Britain would not use its military bases on the Mediterranean island to attack Iraq but would use them for logistical support.

Kasoulides said in line with accords signed by Britain and Cyprus, British forces have the right to use the military bases according to their needs. However, he said, London agreed to a Cypriot request not to use the bases for attacking Iraq.

Kasoulides, commenting on reports Cyprus had expressed readiness to host Iraqi leaders that might choose exile, said his country had approved a request by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to host Iraqi scientists for a short time so that they be interrogated by U.N. arms inspectors outside Iraq.

Kasoulides spoke after meeting Lebanese President Emile Lahoud in Beirut.
