Iran calls conflict greatest tragedy

By MOHAMMED SAYYED

TEHRAN, May 1 (UPI) -- Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Wednesday described Israel's assault on Palestinian territories as the greatest tragedy in modern history and accused the United States of offering Israel unlimited backing in what he called the massacre of the Palestinian people.

"Washington's ultimate objective is to impose its hegemony and dictatorship on all countries of the world, especially the independent and free ones," Khamenei told a crowd of workers in Tehran on the occasion of May Day.

The top Iranian cleric rejected the U.S. description of suicide bombings as terrorist attacks.

"They represent maximum pride for a people seeking freedom and independence as well as the only method that hit the enemy with real fear of being eliminated," he said.

Khamenei hailed Syria and Lebanon for supporting the struggle of the Palestinian people.

"The coming generations will judge the positions of all Arab and Muslim countries regarding the Palestinian cause as much as they will judge their credibility in supporting that cause," he said.

Khamenei blasted U.S. policies on human rights and the war on terror. "Bragging about those principles at a time the U.S. administration has been totally biased in favor of the Jewish entity, the most terrorist regime in the world, is really astounding," Khamenei said.
