Saudi vision to be proposed at Arab summit

BEIRUT, Lebanon, March 19 (UPI) -- The Saudi Foreign Minister said Tuesday Crown Prince Abdullah would propose his peace vision to Arab leaders who were to meet in Beirut next week.

Foreign Minister Saud al Faisal said Abdullah would "first display his vision to his Arab brothers at their summit and then it will be their property to do whatever they want with it."

This vision focuses on the Israeli withdrawal and Palestinian rights, he said.

Speaking after a meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud, he dismissed any "Arab reservation" on Abdullah's peace offer that calls for a complete Israeli withdrawal from territories occupied during the 1967 war in exchange for Arab normal relations.

"I haven't heard of reservations," al Faisal said. "We explained the initiative which is based on international legitimacy and Arab principal demands. All were convinced of this vision and this would naturally reflect on the summit."

He said Abdullah's proposal was based on the Arab position regarding the Israeli pullout, the issue of the Palestinian refugees and other demands. He gave no further details.

Al Faisal said he was carrying a letter from Saudi King Fahd to Lebanese President Emile Lahoud confirming the kingdom's readiness to make the summit meeting a success.

"The success of this summit will not be but with an inner Arab vision based on the will of the Arab countries to deal with their problems," he said. "If this happens and we unite our ranks on a vision, then I believe the summit would have served our main cause, which is the Palestinian cause."

Earlier Tuesday, al Faisal met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus to discuss "the latest developments in the region and Abdallah's ideas in preparation for holding the Arab summit in Beirut," according to a Syrian presidential statement.

The Saudi Foreign Minister also met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa in Cairo shortly before flying to Damascus and Beirut.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan al-Muashar was set to arrive in Beirut late Tuesday for talks with the Lebanese officials about the summit preparations.
