D.R. Congo mine collapses, dozens killed

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- More than 30 people were killed when a coltan mine collapsed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported Tuesday.

The victims included traders who sold food and other supplies to the miners. Coltan is a metal used in the manufacture of mobile phones.

Only three bodies have been recovered from the mine southwest of Goma, the BBC said. The mine is under the control of rebels with the Rally for Congolese Democracy.

The mine collapsed about a week ago, after heavy rains.
