ESSEN, Germany, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- A German energy company announced it opened a 32.8 megawatt wind farm in the United Kingdom, saying it adds to the nation's low-carbon legacy.

RWE Innogy opened its 16-turbine, $73 million Goole Fields 1 Wind Farm in Yorkshire. The company said the wind farm will be able to meet the energy demands of 18,200 average households per year.

"Goole Fields Wind Farm ... will create a cleaner energy legacy for the area by generating home grown electricity from the wind for thousands of homes," Project Manager Tim Daldry said in a Thursday statement.

Though coal still dominates the British power sector, the country is emerging as a wind energy leader, and is the world leader in offshore wind installations.

The U.K. Green Investment Bank in March acquired a 10 percent stake in the Gwynt y Mor offshore wind farm from Germany's RWE Innogy for $360 million. That project is the largest offshore wind farm under construction in Europe, with more than 500 MW of installed capacity.
