Yemen natural gas pipeline bombed

SANAA, Yemen, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- A natural gas company with operations in Yemen confirmed insurgents bombed a natural gas pipeline running to a terminal on the Gulf of Aden.

Violence in Yemen has been attributed to fighters loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and separately to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. Saleh stepped down in February.

Yemen LNG said there was an explosion at a pipeline about 20 miles north of the liquefaction plant at Balhaf. No injuries were reported.

"Yemen LNG confirms the sabotage of the 38-inch gas pipeline that links the block 18 to the Balhaf terminal on the Gulf of Aden," the company said in a statement.

The company early this month denied reports that one of its pipelines was the target of sabotage. A 38-inch pipeline tied to Balhaf terminal, the country's only liquefied natural gas export facility, was bombed Aug. 21 but back in service by early September.

It was unclear if the targets were the same.

In June, the Yemeni Ministry of Oil said attacks on oil and natural gas infrastructure cost the country as much as $15 million per day in lost revenue.
