INDIANAPOLIS, April 5 (UPI) -- Executives at an oil reclamation company were sentenced for dumping oily water into the Indianapolis metropolitan sewer system, the EPA said.
Three executives at Ecological Systems, Inc. were sentenced in U.S. District Court in Indiana for violating the Clean Water Act. Each was selected to three years' probation and a total of $25,000 in fines for the violations.
All three are barred from applying for environmental licenses or from working in the environmental field without disclosing the environmental violations.
The EPA said the oil reclamation company discharged untreated water from its Indianapolis plant into a sewer system.
Among other things, the EPA said it found EIS executives used a hose to bypass treatment facilities and pour about 300,000 gallons of untreated oily water directly into the sewer.
"Today's sentences prove that those who willfully circumvent our nation's laws and put Indiana residents and nearby homeowners at risk will be caught and prosecuted," said Randall Ashe, an EPA criminal investigator, in a statement.
