Egyptian natural gas flows to Israel

TEL AVIV, Israel, March 16 (UPI) -- The supply of natural gas from Egypt to Israel has resumed though initial quantities aren't up to normal levels, an Israeli company announced.

The supply of natural gas from Egypt to Israel was suspended in early February when an explosion damaged a natural gas pipeline between el-Arish and Ashkelon.

Ampal-American Israel Corp. announced it was notified by East Mediterranean Gas Co. that supplies to Egypt resumed late Tuesday.

"EMG has further advised that according to technical protocols, the initial quantities of gas supplied to EMG are less than the contractual quantities and will ramp up on a daily basis to reach full contractual quantities," the holding company said in a statement.

Israel gets about 20 percent of its electricity needs from the gas supplied through the Egyptian pipeline.

The pipeline was to resume deliveries Monday but leaks were found that caused delays.

Ampal holds a 12.5 percent interest in EMG.
