E.ON funds green landfill technology

DUSSELDORF, Germany, March 16 (UPI) -- Capturing methane gas from the decomposition of organic material at a Vietnamese landfill will go a long way to reduce harmful emissions, energy groups said.

E.ON Climate & Renewables, a division of the German energy giant, and French company Bionersis announced a decision to invest more than $9 million to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the Nam Son landfill near Hanoi, Vietnam.

The investments target the construction of an installation that will capture methane emitted from the landfill. The methane recovered would be used to generate electricity for the community surrounding the landfill.

Herve Touati, managing director of emerging technologies for E.ON Climate & Renewables, said the methane-capture technology is "one of the most economically efficient ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change."

Installation is planned for this year. Once completed, the technology would keep more than 4 million tons of harmful gas from being emitted into the atmosphere over 20 years.

The Nam Son landfill receives nearly 3,000 tons of domestic waste each day on a 40-hectare site.
