Duke expands its wind program

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- U.S. company Duke Energy announced it is expanding its wind energy program.

The energy firm said it signed a long-term agreement to sell at least 99 megawatts of electricity from its Wyoming wind farm and a second agreement to buy 100 turbines from GE Energy.

The turbines from General Electric will produce 150 megawatts of power at multiple U.S. wind farm sites.

The power purchase agreement was between Duke and PacifiCorp. Duke is scheduled to begin work at the Campbell Hill Windpower project in Casper, Wyo., early in 2009. PacifiCorp will purchase the power from the project's 66 turbines for 20 years.

With its two new deals, Duke Energy estimates it will have 500 megawatts of wind power projects generating by the end of the year and 5,000 more megawatts in development.
