"Its daily debit will make (177 million cubic feet) of gas for the first time in Azerbaijan's history. Shah Deniz field itself with reserves of (42 trillion cubic feet) is the largest offshore gas field in the world," Yusifzadeh said.

Preliminary operations on the fifth well commenced Dec. 25, 2007.

Meanwhile, operators said production resumed at the Shah Deniz field to supply the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum, or South Caucasus, natural gas pipeline.

Officials with BP Azerbaijan, the majority shareholder for the operations consortium, said production at four existing wells at Shah Deniz resumed Monday following disruptions caused by conflicts in Georgia.
