SSE sets carbon reduction goal

PERTH, Scotland, June 3 (UPI) -- U.K.-based Scottish and Southern Energy will reduce its carbon dioxide output.

SSE said it will cut the amount of carbon dioxide per kilowatt hour of electricity produced at power stations by 50 percent in all power stations in which it has ownership or interest.

The aim is to meet the reduction goal between 2019 and 2020. Based on SSE's existing electricity output, the target would mean there would be around 12 million tons fewer carbon dioxide emissions compared with 2005 and 2006.

The new target, set following SSE's acquisition of Airtricity, replaces SSE's previous target, which was to secure a 20 percent reduction by 2015-2016.

SSE's target includes certified emissions reductions from specific generation projects under the Clean Development Mechanism established under the Kyoto Protocol, but would exclude those that are not related to a specific generation project.
