Areva will spend billions on decommissions

LA HAGUE, France, May 30 (UPI) -- French nuclear power group Areva will begin decommissioning one of its nuclear plants.

The firm said it will have to spend an estimated $78 million to $155 million per year to dismantle a non-functional facility that was being used to treat spent nuclear fuel in La Hague, France.

The cleanup project could last up to 25 years, costing up to $3.9 billion.

The La Hague site is operated by the company's Areva NC business unit, which handles the complete nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining, conversion and enrichment through spent fuel reprocessing and recycling.

The site receives nuclear waste from French energy major EDF and other utilities.
