Shell calls for EU to focus on CCS

BRUSSELS, April 7 (UPI) -- Royal Dutch Shell is pushing carbon capture in the European Union.

The oil giant called on EU nations to move toward developing carbon capture and storage systems, saying they will be a key part of ambitious plans to battle climate change.

Shell said there is not enough incentive for companies to bring in the technology, and without more friendly measures carbon dioxide levels could increase.

Shell unveiled a blueprint that assumes that 90 percent of coal and gas-fired power plants in developed countries capture carbon dioxide by 2050.

"Today none capture carbon dioxide," Royal Dutch Shell Chief Executive Jeroen van der Veer said in a statement.

The technology is expensive and still not mature, but by implementing a better carbon credit trade scheme, Shell said the investment would be steered toward the technology and firms would have more incentive to develop it.
