Russia, Ukraine collaborate on nuke safety

MOSCOW, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Russian and Ukrainian nuclear companies have signed a deal to collaborate on safety, engineering and technology for 2007.

Itar-Tass reports Russia's Rosenergoatom and Ukraine's Energoatom will link the two companies' scientists.

"The cooperation program is a form of partnership and a factor in maintenance of a required level of safety at our nuclear power plants," said Nikolai Davidenko, deputy technical director of Rosenergoatom.

Russia operates 31 nuclear reactors pushing 21,743 megawatts and has another 29 reactors proposed, planned or under construction.

Ukraine operates 15 reactors serving 13,168 megawatts and two reactors planned.

Rosenergoatom and Energoatom's scientists will work together on nuclear safety, engineering, repair and waste issues, among others.
