Moscow reassures Europe on energy supplies

MOSCOW, May 22 (UPI) -- Russia told Western leaders Monday that Moscow would not renege on its energy deals with Europe.

Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Zhukov attempted to abate European concerns over Russia oil supplies, saying Russia would increase its energy supplies to the West, ITAR-TASS reported.

"Fears that Russia will reduce supplies or will not honor its full duties in this regard are without foundation," said Zhukov, speaking in the State Duma at a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe's economic and development commission.

He also stressed that Moscow was seeking "to sell its energy to all countries at world market prices, and that includes CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries."

"We will honor all our commitments to supply energy and we will not renege on them," Zhukov said.
