Pakistan seeks ways to up gas imports

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, April 20 (UPI) -- Pakistan is working on ways to increase gas imports from neighbors, including Iran and Turkmenistan, to meet its growing energy needs.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz told a delegation headed by 4Gas chief executive officer Paul van Poecke that his country is looking at all possible sources to bridge the gap between supply and demand, according to state-run PTV World.

He said the opportunities available for exploration and production in Pakistan were among the best in the region, and noted that more than 22 national and foreign companies were working in the onshore and offshore areas of Pakistan.

In a bid to bridge its energy shortfall, Pakistan is working with several of its neighbors, including India and Afghanistan, to build gas pipelines that will supply the region.

It is working with India and Iran to build a pipeline that will run from the Islamic Republic, via Pakistan, to India, and with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan on another pipeline, this one for Central Asian gas.
