PHOENIX, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Southwest Airlines suffered a technical glitch Sunday that delayed flights and caused long lines at airports across the United States, the company said.

Problems in Southwest's ticketing and boarding system at airports and online created about 450 delayed flights and lines that stretched far beyond airport entry doors.

The cause of the glitch was not determined, but a statement on the company's website asked customers traveling on Sunday or Monday to check in early and print their boarding passes online before they arrive at the airport.

The company also asked customers to arrive at the airport at least two hours early for all flights. If checking luggage, print a bag tag at the self-service kiosk next to the ticket counter.

"We have teams working around the country to support getting our customers and their checked luggage to their destinations tonight," the company statement said. "Other groups are making operational decisions to minimize impacts for those who are checking in for travel tomorrow."
