NEW YORK, June 17 (UPI) -- Brian Williams and NBC have reached an agreement for the former NBC Nightly News anchor to remain with the network, but not in his previous post.

Williams is four months into his six-month suspension for inconsistencies in his reporting that have led some to speculate NBC would sever ties with him. A review by NBC found that Williams "made a number of inaccurate statements about his own role and experiences covering events in the field," a news release from the network said.

NBC Universal said Williams will remain with the network, but will take a role on cable station MSNBC. There he will take on the position of anchor covering breaking news and special reports.

"Brian now has the chance to earn back everyone's trust. His excellent work over twenty-two years at NBC News has earned him that opportunity," said Andrew Lack, chairman of NBC News and MSNBC.

An interview of Williams with Matt Lauer is scheduled to air Friday morning on Today and again Friday night on NBC Nightly News.

"I'm sorry. I said things that weren't true. I let down my NBC colleagues and our viewers, and I'm determined to earn back their trust," Williams said of is new role. "I am grateful for the chance to return to covering the news. My new role will allow me to focus on important issues and events in our country and around the world, and I look forward to it."

Meanwhile, Lester Holt will permanently take over as host of NBC Nightly News. He took the position temporarily when Williams was suspended.

"Lester has done outstanding work for NBC News over the last ten years, and he's performed remarkably well over the last few months under very tough circumstances," Lack said. "He's an exceptional anchor who goes straight to the heart of every story and is always able to find its most direct connection to the everyday lives of our audience. In many ways, television news stands at a crossroads, and Lester is the perfect person to meet the moment."
