GLENDALE, Ariz., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- This year's Super Bowl will be lit with LED bulbs for the first time in history.
The University of Phoenix Stadium will feature 44,928 Cree XLamp MK-R LEDs from the Cree and Ephesus Lighting company. The stadium previously sported 780 larger, less energy efficient halide bulbs. The new setup is expected to save roughly 75 percent of the energy that would have been otherwise used.

The LED bulbs are expected to use 310,000 watts to light the stadium, rather than the 1.24 million watts halide bulbs would require.
The LED bulbs also don't take any time to heat up, as halide bulbs do, saving energy and preventing a lasting blackout.
