PITTSBURGH, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- American Eagle Outfitters is barking up a new tree with a line of clothing for Fido. Knit sweaters, beanies that say things like "hump day," and "pupper" vests for dogs, priced from $12.95 to $39.95, will be unleashed in select stores across the nation beginning today under the brand American Beagle Outfitters.

Really head-over-heels pet lovers can get matching outfits. "You'll be able to dress like your best friend," gushes American Beagle.

The idea was born last April Fool's Day when the store, as a joke, touted American Beagle. Customers thought it was funny, but started searching for the dog outfits.

Like other teen-clothing brands, American Eagle has been grappling with sluggish sales and no new fashion trends, forcing the chain to clear out some merchandise and close stores. Officials hope the new dog strategy will fetch bigger profits. Americans were expected to spend $350 million on Halloween pet costumes; who knows what's in store for winter holiday wear?
