EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Worldwide sales of Mattel Inc.'s iconic Barbie doll fell 21 percent in 2014's third quarter, part of the cause of Mattel's 22 percent profit decline in the same period.

The slide in the popularity of Barbie, manufactured since 1959, was a continuation of a 15 percent decline in sales in the third quarter of 2014.

Mattel announced Thursday it earned $331.8 million in the quarter, compared to $422.8 million in the third quarter of 2013. It marked the fourth consecutive quarter of declines for the company.

Sales of other company brands fell as well, Fisher-Price by 16 percent and American Girl dolls by 7 percent.

"Clearly we have work to do as we enter the fourth quarter, and we remain focused on executing during the all-important holiday season and beyond," Mattel Chief Executive Bryan Stockton said in a statement.
