Consumer confidence edges lower in European Union

BRUSSELS, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Consumer confidence slipped in the eurozone and European Union in January, the European Commission said Thursday.

In a flash estimate that could be revised, the commission said its consumer confidence indicators from December to January fell from minus 11.7 to minus 12.7 in the 18-member eurozone and from minus 8.8 to minus 9.3 in the 28-member European Union.

The numbers are typically negative. The long-term average for the index, dating to 2003, is minus 12.5.
