PETALUMA, Calif., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- A California meat producer has voluntarily closed a plant where 8.7 million pounds of recalled beef and other meats were produced, a spokesman said Monday.
Rancho Feeding Corp. of Petaluma said the facility was closed "out of an abundance of caution" after the U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered the recalls. The USDA said meat was processed without a full federal inspection and the company "processed diseased and unsound animals," the Los Angeles Times reported.
As a result, the agency said, the "products are ... unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce."
Rancho Feeding Corp. spokesman Scott Parks said the company is in the process of making a full list of customers who bought affected products. He declined to identify any of those customers publicly.
