Britain's unemployment rate trending lower at 7.1 percent

LONDON, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- The unemployment rate trended lower in Britain from September to November in 2013, the government's data agency said Wednesday.

The Office of National Statistics said the unemployment rate dropped 0.5 percentage points for persons between the age of 16 and 64 to 7.1 percent.

The employment rate also rose, climbing 0.5 percentage points to 72.1 percent in the September to November period compared to the months of June to August.

In the latest tracking period, there were 2.32 million unemployed people of working age, down 167,000 from June to August 2013.

The Office of National Statistics said in the final quarter of the year, October to December, pay rose 0.9 percent in 2013 from the final quarter of 2012.
