The vehicle is part of GM's effort to capture a chunk of the midsized pickup market, which the Detroit Free Press said had been largely abandoned by rivals Ford and Chrysler.
"There is a lot of dissatisfaction in the midsize segment with today's trucks," said Jeff Luke, GM's executive chief engineer for trucks. "It's been somewhat neglected. We think that we now are resetting the bar."
The midsized market is currently dominated by Toyota and Nissan.
The Free Press said the Missouri-built Canyon featured a narrower width than the larger Chevy Silvarado and notable rivals such as the Toyota Tundra and Ford F-150.
Luke said the 183-horsepower Canyon also features a step built into the rear end plus one of the quietest interiors of any pickup on the market. "We have sweated over every millimeter in the design," he said.
