TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Uzbekistan's president signed off on a protocol for a free-trade agreement with Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States members, his office said.

The protocol ratified by Uzbek President Islam Karimov, originally signed in May, specifies that disagreements over trade among members of the CIS free-trade zone will be addressed through bilateral talks, Russia's RIA Novosti news agency reported Saturday.

Both houses of the Uzbek Parliament approved the protocol this fall.

The CIS free-trade zone is a loosely organized affiliation of eight countries. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have signed on to the protocol but have not ratified it.
