Wells Fargo working on damage control for late payments

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Wells Fargo said it was working to solve problems that may have resulted from a malfunction in its automatic bill paying system in Central Florida.

"We are working directly with billers and customers to make sure that this situation would have no negative ramifications at all for any of the customers," said Wells Fargo spokeswoman Jennifer Langan, referring to a glitch that caused automatic payments from bank accounts to be sent late.

The glitch occurred in late November, the Orlando, Fla., Sentinel reported.

The newspaper said Wednesday that Wells would not disclose how many of its 70 million customers were affected by the malfunctioning system.

The bank, however, guarantees that it will pay late fees that occur if a late payment is the bank's fault.

The bank has been criticized for failing to notify customers who found out from their creditors that payments were late.

"It's really too bad that customers would have to scramble like that to find out what had gone wrong," said Alex Matjanec, co-founder of MyBankTracker.com, a consumer-finance information Web site.
